The colour that does not survive print

Why a magenta petal that looks perfect on screen turns flat on a press sheet, and the two habits that prevent it.

There is a specific disappointment that belongs to floral print work. The picture looks extraordinary on the monitor. The proof arrives and the flower has gone dull, flat, slightly grey in the deepest part of the petal. Nothing is technically wrong. The colour simply did not exist in the destination.

What actually happened

Screens make colour by adding light. Presses make it by subtracting it with ink. The set of colours each can produce is different, and the overlap is smaller than most people expect.

Magenta is where the gap is widest. A saturated magenta petal on a calibrated screen sits well outside anything four-colour process ink can reach. When the file is converted, every one of those out-of-gamut values has to be mapped to the nearest reachable colour. If several different magentas all map to the same reachable one, the gradient between them collapses, and the petal loses the internal shading that made it read as a three-dimensional object.

That flatness, not the hue shift, is what people notice. A slightly duller pink still looks like a flower. A pink with no tonal separation looks like a sticker.

Habit one: choose with the destination in mind

Before you fall in love with a frame, ask where it is going. For a screen campaign, pick whatever looks best. For packaging, prefer a flower whose colour lives inside the reachable range, or one whose interest comes from form and light rather than from saturation alone.

Cream, white, dusty pink, deep red and almost every yellow convert well. Electric magenta, pure violet and saturated cyan-leaning blues do not. This is not a rule about which flowers are better; it is a rule about which photographs will survive the trip.

If the magenta is the whole point of the picture, plan for a spot colour and price it in.

Habit two: convert once, at the end

Work in a wide space, do your editing, and convert to CMYK as the final step using the profile your printer supplies. Not a generic one. Not on import.

Then look at the conversion with a soft proof and a gamut warning turned on. If a large connected area of the petal lights up as out of gamut, you have the collapse problem. The fix is usually a small, targeted reduction in saturation applied before the conversion, which lets you decide which tonal separations to keep instead of letting the conversion decide for you.

The proof is not optional

Paper does more to a red than the conversion does. An uncoated stock will pull warmth out of everything and drop your contrast by a visible margin; a gloss coating will do close to the opposite.

For anything where the flower is the hero, ask for a contract proof on the actual stock. It costs a small amount and it moves the surprise from after the print run to before it.
